Icons and Pictograms

Using images and symbols to communicate without words can be traced back to stone-age cave drawings. In today’s world that craves easy and instantaneous messaging, graphic symbols are still powerful tools. At Metro, we use simple and friendly icons and pictograms to convey easy-to-understand instructions or messages at a glance, independent of language or cultural differences. These proprietary images are used across our marketing communications.

Metro Icons

Our icons are colorful, fun and inviting. Horizontal icons, isometric icons and scenes help us tell stories that are culturally significant and representative of some aspect of the LA lifestyle. Metro icons are often paired with supporting copy to further illuminate the story being told.

Typical uses for icons:

  • Advertising
  • Fleet Decals
  • Marketing Communications

Metro Pictograms

Our distinctive, single-color pictograms are used to enhance the clarity of wayfinding and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant signage. They can simplify directions for riders with limited English proficiency and visually represent services and behaviors meant to maintain efficiency and safety on Metro. They also support Metro’s commitment and compliance to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color and national origin.

Metro’s proprietary pictograms are designed exclusively in-house. They may not be altered, and their proportions must be maintained.

Typical uses for pictograms:

  • Identification
  • Wayfinding
